Liberia's Public Health Law Under Revision

Liberia is on the verge of reforming its 42-year old Public Health Law.  Between 11-13 July 2018, the Health Ministry and the Law Reform Commission, in Collaboration with UNFPA and the Swedish Embassy, hosted a Conference with a cross-section of Liberian Legislators in the Central Liberian City of Gbarnga.

In their opening remarks, the conveners pointed to the fact that the 1976 Law was now out of Touch with changing realities in Both National and International Health arena. They said, as such,  they were proposing a comprehensive overhaul of said Law to comform to realities. Senators present included Dr. Peter Coleman, Steven Zargo, Stephen Kaipay, and Dr.Tornolar of Grand Kru, Lofa, Grand Bassa, and; Margibi counties respectively. Members of the House of Representatives present were Hons. Rosannah Shaacks, Julie Wiah, Ceebee Barshall, Solomon George, Johnson Gwaikolo, Joseph Nya Sunwabi and myself all from Rivercess, Lofa, Montserrado and Nimba -Counties respectively. Following the three-day event, Lawmakers present expressed optimism that they have received the requisit insights needed to support the passage of the Act into Law when It hits the floor of the Legislature.
