The 2019 State of the World Population was recently launched by the Vice President of Liberia, Mrs. Jewel Howard-Taylor, at the Monrovia City Hall. This year’s launch also coincided with the commemoration of the 50th and 25th Anniversary of the United Nation Population Fund ( UNFPA ) and the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) respectively.

One of the highlights of the celebration was the honoring of four individuals and an institution by UNFPA for their invaluable contribution toward the achievement of it’s (UNFPA) global mandates. Those honored included a veteran Liberian Demographer and FATHER of Liberian CENSUS, Mr. Abel Z. Massalee, who is also a Retired Professor of Demographics at the University of Liberia; Dr. John Mulbah, also known as FISTULA DOCTOR and a Professor of the Medical College of the University of Liberia; Mrs. Deddeh Mulbah, a Retired Maternal Health Practitioner and the Liberia Nursery and Midwifery Association, which was represented by its President.

Amidst all of this, I was singled out for the highest recognition for elevating population issues at the pinnacle of decision making in Liberia and the World as a whole. Giving the rationale for honoring the honorees, the Resident Representative of UNFPA to Liberia extolled each of us for our exceptional efforts in enabling UNFPA achieve its mandate. He expressed the hope that  the honorees will continue to inspire others to join ranks.
