On Wednesday, June 26, 2019, a joint committee of the Liberia’s House of Representatives held a public hearing on the draft Domestic Violence Act which, has been with that body since the 53rd Legislature but, was recently resubmitted by the Women Legislative Caucus. The hearing was made possible through the efforts of the Women Legislative Caucus, in collaboration with a group of Liberian Women Advocacy NGOs and the UN WOMEN. The objective of the hearing was to further expose the joint committee to the contents of the Act for possible passage at the soonest possible time. The hearing took place in the port city of Buchanan in Grand Bassa County.

The joint committee, which comprises the committees on Judiciary; Good Governance as well as Gender, Children & Social Welfare, was led by the three heads of the constituent committees; namely, from left to right at the head of the table: Hon. Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa (Judiciary); Hon. Julie F. Wiah (Gender) and your humble servant Hon. Larry P. Younquoi (Good Governance).

Witnesses, who provided professional inputs on the Draft Act included Liberia’s Gender Minister Williametta Saydee Tar ( first on left row); Chairlady of the Women Civil Society advocacy Group, Madam Precious Greaves, among others.  Hon. Rosana Shaacks, Chairlady of the Women Legislative Caucus, provide broad overview of the bill. All witnesses passionately called on members of the committee to recommend the bill for passage as it stands to immensely favor the liberation of women from the current burden of injustices and inequality
